Properties of Phycobilins from Porphyra Naiadum
The phycobilin pigments were freshly extracted from Porphyra naiadum in the cold. At least two types of phycoerythrin (I and II) can be distinguished by electrophoresis, chromatography, and spectral characteristics. At pH 5.0 phycoerythrin II has a relatively large negative charge, while phycoerythrin I is nearly iso-electric. At pH 7.0, however, phycoerythrin I has the larger negative charge. ...

Objectives: Aim of the present work was to investigate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiulcer effects of red seaweed Porphyra vietnamensis (P. vietnamenis). Materials and Methods: Aqueous (POR) and alcoholic (PE) fractions were successfully isolated from P. vietnamenis. Further biological investigations were performed using a classic test of paw edema induced by carrageenan, writhing in...

The unicellular red alga, Cyanidium cddurium, synthesizes phycocyanobilin from protoheme via biliverdin IXa. In vitro transformation of protoheme to biliverdin IXa and biliverdin IXa to phycobilins were previously shown to require NADPH, ferredoxin, and ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase, as well as specific heme oxygenase and phycobilin formation enzymes. The role of NADPH in these reactions was inves...
